S. stands for Lion. I am from a Sikh family. Sikhs oppose the caste system and thus all share the name Singh which is why my family kept the old surname Bali as an added extra I suppose. However, nowadays many non-Bali Kashmiri Sikhs appear to append this extra name to their Singh as well which eventually will result in "equality" on a more elevated level.
