Symmetry transitions in SU(2) staggered Dirac spectra

The spectrum of the staggered Dirac operator obtained from quenched configurations is studied in detail, and its connection to Random Matrix Theory is discussed. At small and intermediate values of the gauge action parameter β, the symmetry properties of the SU(2) staggered operator are different from those of the continuum Dirac operator. At large β values, the eigenvalues tend to cluster around the values corresponding to the free theory, and their fluctuations are consistent with the restoration of the continuum symmetries. The physical implications of these results are discussed.
