The SFB/TR55 "Hadron Physics from Lattice QCD" was established in July 2008 by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft at the Universities of Regensburg and Wuppertal. It is coordinated by Regensburg and incorporates groups at Bern and Graz.
The research programme consists of three project areas. A: Lattice QCD calculations of hadronic observables. B: Algorithms for Lattice QCD simulations. C: Development and deployment of the QPACE parallel supercomputer.
The results of project area A are required for the interpretation of particle collider experiments such as the LHC at CERN or the planned FAIR facility at Darmstadt.
Project area B is interdisciplinary in nature and prominently includes Computational and Applied Mathematicians from Wuppertal and Regensburg, in addition to the Theoretical Physicists.
In project area C the QPACE (QCD PArallel computing on CEll), based on the IBM PowerXCell 8i processor, a follow-up model to the Cell/B.E chip, known from Sony's Playstation III, has been developed. The development team consists of physicists and engineers of the Universities of Regensburg, Wuppertal, Ferrara and Milano Bicocca, of DESY Zeuthen and Forschungszentrum Jülich as well as of IBM Böblingen, La Gaude and Rochester.
